Carasan Wearable Art

These delicate, durable and wearable art pieces are created by the family company: Carasan. Their widely successful and innovative work has been noted in numerous publications including Allure, Living and the New York Post. Look out for their new creations at their website (link here - check out accessories), Etsy page (link here) and on twitter (link here).

The following is a company description borrowed from their facebook page:

"If a sheer work of art is what comes to mind upon viewing any of the designs of Carasan, then you have called to mind a comparison that is not far from the truth, as the designers are inspired by art and nature in all that they create for their line. Staying true to their commitment of providing quality not quantity, Carasan will never be a mass-market company. Says Cassandra, "It is like buying art. Does your client buy original art, a limited edition lithograph or does she buy a mass-produced print? Our line is for free-spirited and self-assured women who are youthful at any age and want to wear high quality, one-of-a-kind designs." Their inspiration dates back to 1920's designers Erte and Fortuny. Offers Terri, "The Carasan line is one that transcends time. These are items you will want to pass down to your daughter. The Carasan woman is the soul of a Victorian socialite born into the body of an urban artist. She is a woman of today who wants fun, exciting clothing that will last season after season."

"Carasan epitomizes today's young American Couture, transcending time with its authentic creations and looking back into history for inspiration, not just for their designs, but also how we all impact the world in which we live forever.

"Terri and Cassandra Rosenthal are the mother-daughter design duo who are the faces behind this small, but internationally known label. When she could not find a job in New York City, after moving there to attend college, Cassandra asked her mother to go into business with her. They started Carasan Designs LLC when Cassandra was only 18 years old and had just begun attending classes at the Fashion Institute of Design in New York City. She has since graduated from F.I.T with honors, receiving her Bachelor's of Science degree. While attending college she fell in love with New York and made it not only her home but also, the home for Carasan, which is now based in Brooklyn. Terri holds down their studio at her southern home base at the family's small farm in Purcellville, Virginia. You may also run into her while she commutes from Virginia via the train to New York a few times a month."

Shark Week!

The shark hat, created by Josh Freeman (AKA ObeyMyBrain on Etsy) playfully bites on your scull and keeps your head warm! This soft and scary creature will provide a not-so-menacing underwater experience and will keep those ears from freezing during the winter. And don't forget to check out shark hat's friend - the squid hat (link here)!

Another logo redesign. I based the ornamented "G" off of a picture of a spider web stitch I found at www.victorian-embroidery-and-crafts.com

Octopus-Inspired Home Decor

I know this isn't really fashion-related - but I'm in a nautical mood.

This suction cupped sculpture was made by ArtAkimbo (found on Etsy here) from Redding, Connecticut. ArtAkimbo makes a variety of surreal, anthropomorphic figures that may remind you of some of Dada's work. With a focus on creatures of the sea and human noses, any one of their pieces would make an excellent conversation piece!

ArtAkimbo is also a member of the EtsyDarkTeam. Link here: www.etsydarkteam.webs.com

TDF - Theatre Development Fund

A coworker of mine directed me to this site. The Theatre Development Fund (TDF) rents out costumes used in professional shows for special events and smaller productions. They look pretty cool - not like I'm putting on a show any time soon. But if you're in Manhattan it may be worth a look around. Their address is: TDF Costume Collection, 601 West 26th Street, Suite 325, NY NY.

Cyberlox and Dreadfalls

I've been wanting to post about these awesome kinds of hair extensions called cyberlox and dreadfalls. They're a voluminous, colorful and (above all) fun way to enhance your hair without dyeing it (although lots of people dye their hair and wear extensions). Below are 3 of my favorite cyberlox/dreadfall designers:

Sarah Giaconi of I Kick Shins - Website - Facebook - Etsy

Jessica Gore of Candy Toxin Hair Designs - Facebook - Deviantart 1 Deviantart 2

Mel of Doctored Locks - Website - Youtube - Twitter

*These girls have some other links to their work - I just provided 3 for each*

EnlightenedPlatypus

These amazing sweater coats are made by EnlightenedPlatypus (Lisa Marie) in Colorado. I'm not even a huge fan of the patchwork look, but these are outstanding pieces! She has her work up for viewing and sale here: on deviantart and etsy. Lisa only started selling her work on etsy in the spring and already has nearly 50 sales! Her style is beautiful and original, and definitely at least worth a look!

Nice Day for a Black Wedding

Went to a friend's wedding recently. Her color scheme was red, black and white. It inspired me to do some online window shopping to get ideas on what I'd like to do for my (eventual) wedding day. So I looked up black wedding dresses. I wouldn't necessarily wear one, but I wanted to see what was out there. I was surprised I really didn't find much, but these are worth sharing:

I'm getting a little obsessed with duct tape. Thought this Iron Man costume by Rob Emery was pretty cool!

Gotta Love that Rainbow Hair

I love unnaturally colored hair. I'm too much of a wuss to color my own hair (yet). Here's some of my new favorites all found on deviantart.com

Vampire Freaks!

If you hear "vampire freaks" and think of a bunch of preteens drooling over Twilight sequels, you may be doing yourself a disservice. VampireFreaks.com is an online community of gothic industrial culture. Here you can keep up-to-date with the latest in goth related music, events, fashion and life in general. I had the pleasure of bumping into their booth this past weekend at NYCC and got to check out some of the merch up close. VampireFreaks has a location in NYC at 189 Avenue A (between 11th & 12th St.) which looks amazing by their store pix seen here. If you can't make it into the city, they have an online store too called f***themainstream.com which is filled with just as much awesomeness to their retail store.

The Cushzilla Revolution

A trip to the zoo has never been more inspiring! You can now live your dream of walking around in the fur of your favorite animal with the cushi! Oddly enough, I found these while researching zentai suits for a friend. The cushi, sold at cushzilla.com is simultaneously adorable and a bit disturbing. Reminiscent of the pink bunny pjs from A Christmas Story, the cushi is a cozy alternative to pajamas, Halloween outfits and everyday attire (as seen in the photo above). The even more wearable, snuggie-like costumes are made of 100% soft polyester and are kid (and adult) friendly. Ranging in style from panda to penguin to dinosaur you can roam the streets nice and snug in the spirit of the animal of your choice. Just be sure to clean up after yourself.

What? thegirlinthebigbox - That's what!

What is probably the most well known psychedelic drawing by Marlene Freimanis. I first discovered the drawing while looking up images of rainbow hair on Google. The use of shade, highlights and colorful chaos is absolutely gorgeous! Marlene, AKA thegirlinthebigbox at devianart.com, has multiple rainbowrific drawings available for purchase (as prints) including Toxicity, biPolar and StrangeLove. As one of the most popular artworks of all time on deviantart, What has earned thegirlinthebigbox new followers every day this year!

PLEASE take special notice of the watermarks on her work! Just like many other talented artists, Marlene has had some difficulty with some rude busybodies stealing her work. While such people certainly cannot be blamed for knowing talent when they see it, please respect her and her work by NOT reproducing or selling it without her permission!
